The French Paradox

Vitamin Shoppe - Shop NowThe term French Paradox was coined by Serge Renaud, a scientist from Bordeaux University. This is from the observation that French people suffer a low incidence of coronary heart disease and also obesity although they have a diet for food that is rich in ingredients that may cause these health problems. According to research, only seven percent of French adults are obese. Different theories were brought about by this French paradox and one of it is the early intake of food and portions of food become smaller as the day goes on. A recent study says that the size of servings greatly affect this paradox. More reasons are said to be the cause of this phenomenon and here are some:

The intake of red wine

The reason for the French paradox is mostly credited to the moderate drinking of red wine. According to some scientists, the habitual drinking of red wine with a meal is the key reason why French people are able to stay healthy. This is because red wine contains flavonoids -an antioxidant that is a natural chemical compound which promotes to the heart and blood vessels health benefits. In 1991, when 60 Minutes aired in the United States that red wine decreases cardiac disease, red wine consumption increased by 44%.

Eating food slowly

Did you know that the brain takes 15-20 minutes to give a signal that one is full? This is why slowing down while you eat by taking smaller bites helps you savor food and makes you feel satisfied even with a lesser amount. French people love to enjoy their food by savoring each bite. They do this by individually tasting food as opposed to eating a pile of food all at once.

Smaller food portioning

Comparing food portions between Americans and the French, French people eat smaller food portions. Although they are fund of cream, butter and cheese, research show that the French consume less calories resulting in lower rates of people who are obese and overweight. A comparison shows that in France, the standard size of yogurt for an individual person is 125 grams while in America, the standard size is 225 grams. That's a 100 grams difference!

Frequent intake of vegetables and also fruits

Vegetables are known for their high content of vitamins and fiber and this is one visible reason for the French paradox. The regular consumption of vegetables and fruits may lead to lower risks of coronary heart diseases according to epidemiologic studies.

Other reasons include self-discipline, limited or no snacks at all, the preference of water over other beverages and being physically active.
